Surprisingly few people consciously choose insurance as their ideal career, and as a member of that rarified number Phyllis Tham makes no secret that she loves her work. As Head of Financial Lines in Delta Underwriting’s Singapore office, she is an underwriting powerhouse with a wide-ranging skillset, contributing to product development and marketing, strategy, intermediary enablement, and much more.
Phyllis takes considerable pride in sharing her knowledge and building well-informed, highly capable teams delivering desirable service outcomes. She works seamlessly across senior leadership while mentoring and developing junior members, with an appreciation that it is people who create value. She’s also got a sharp eye on the bottom line, and her role in contributing to Delta Underwriting’s ongoing success.
It was back in University that Phyllis first encountered underwriting as part of her financial services degree. Immediately recognising that this was the direction for her, she got her start with AIG right out of college in 2011. Her destiny awaited, as it was here that she met the eventual Delta Underwriting founders – and when the chance to add her talents to Delta came in 2022, she didn’t hesitate.
With her focus on continuous learning and development, the emergence of cybersecurity insurance as a hot new category immediately appealed, and Phyllis has quickly established her credibility as a leading underwriter. She sees cyber as an indispensable component of existing business insurance solutions, and believes it is ideally positioned in Financial Lines.
Viewing growing demand and intense competition in cybersecurity insurance as a motivating factor, Phyllis and her team work across Delta Underwriting to create compelling value propositions through innovation and a clear understanding of intermediary and end customer expectations. Taking a data-driven approach, she is laser-focused on running a profitable and sustainable book, while bringing quality insurance cover to the market.
Having already made her mark, Phyllis continues contributing to product development, underwriting strategy, and business innovation.
Outside the office, she’s takes regular Pilates sessions and is a keen international traveller always seeking new and exciting destinations.
